During the boom years in the eighties many large companies built vairous amusement parks to capitalize on Japan’s expanding leisure industry. Some of the parks have closed down, but some have continued to expand. Serveral parks also have massive swimming pools which open in summer.

Tokyo Disneyland

Tokyo Disneyland opened in 1983 and was the first Disney theme park to be built outside of the United States. Tokyo Disneyland is very popular with locals and tourists alike. Tokyo Disneyland’s attractions and rides are similar to the original Disneyland and Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom.

How to get to Tokyo Disneyland

The quickest and easiest way to get to Tokyo Disneyland is by train. From JR Tokyo Station take the JR Keiyo or Musashino line and get off at Maihama station. The trip takes about 15 minutes from Tokyo station.

Hotels close to Disneyland

A good way to beat the crowds and maximize your time at Disneyland is to stay close to the park. The Sunroute Plaza Tokyo Hotel is one of Disneyland’s official hotels and offers guests a FREE daily shuttle to the park.

Tokyo DisneySea opened in 2001 and is said to be the most expensive theme park ever built. The park has a “nautical” theme and was designed to appeal more to adults.

Fujikyu Highland

Fujikyu highland is located near Mount Fuji. It once had the record for highest roller coaster. The “Dodonpa” coaster travels at speeds over 100 mph and has vertical drops. During winter the park also has ice-skating.

This park features the amazing “Big O” the world’s first center-less ferris wheel and is conveniently located near Suidobashi in the center of Tokyo.
